FIT
15th May, Fat Galerie Paris
Featuring the work of Peter Marigold and Raw-Edges Design Studio.
The work of the designers focuses on the notions of adaptation and alteration in the forms of objects.
Through explorative making processes new forms are found and created in both ready mades and original materials. The designers use a rich variety of source material and techniques to develop unique pieces that reflect a high level of engagement with the finished pieces.
In the ‘Tailoring Furniture’ series by Yael Mer of Raw Edges, a technique similar to that used in the clothing industry is applied to furniture. A pattern is generated and when assembled, the resulting void is filled with foam. Just as a suit is altered to fit the client, the furniture is custom made and adapted to fit the user be they tall, short, skinny or fat.
The process is unconventional in terms of industrialized furniture, in that it proposes a construction technique without a mould. The pattern itself becomes both the defining surface and the mould. In a sense it is a reversal of upholstery in which normally a skin is applied over the stuffing.
Peter Marigold’s work experiments with the notion of forms existing within forms and the exploration of the sometimes bizarre qualities of the geometry of the world we live in.
The ‘Split’ series uses the simple principle that the internal angles of a shape split into pieces will always add up to 360 degrees. This principle is applied to create a sprawling wall display of boxes which appear both chaotic and logical at the same time. A development of the process led to the Octave series, in which a split branch is used to create free standing shelving structures that are reminiscent of musical instruments in both forms and materials. A small prototype of a production piece ‘Make/Shift’ consists of divided storage elements that expand and contract to adapt to different architectural spaces. Other pieces similarly look at the nature of fracturing and reordering materials, objects and forms.
