Looking at their fashion collection, we focused on a skirt made with pleated fabric. Adherent in the top part, it allowed the material to expand in the lower part - creating a unidirectional expansion of the shape. For ‘Pleated pleat’ we explored that principle and generated flexibility from two directions creating a dome shape. We agreed it felt like an interesting form for the seating, as it shrinks when you sit on it, and goes back to its original shape when you get up.
At first, we tried to use paper, which didn’t work out. By chance, we came across a material called Tyvec, seemed to be known by everyone but us. Plastic, but with the same aesthetic & folding qualities as paper it seemed like the perfect medium to execute ‘Pleated Pleat’.
